IF I SHOULD DIE TODAY

If I should die today
who would miss me if I go?
I'm just an old WWII veteran
who walks so very slow!

The sights that I have seen
keep coming back to me,
though sixty years have past
since I flew the Pacific sea!

The Mares of the Night
have kept their appointed round,
for they always come to visit me
leaving tracks upon the ground!

They bring with them the scenes
war veterans saw so long ago.
like seven thousand Marines who
died upon the black sands of Iwo!

Perhaps the Mares would miss me
if I'm not here when they call,
for sixty years they've visited;
but death erects an impassable wall!
