WHO I AM

Yes I am who I am
more than anything a rebel
not a proud rebel but an acknowledged one
who knows himself to be rebellious
Who I am is not who I was
not the inquisitive child who loved school
not the teen-ager who never got it on
with a cute babe too scared to go there
I am not the boy/man volunteering for military
serving five years until WWII wound down
nor am I the wartime groom taking a bride
handing her a future as uncertain as mine
I have wished to be again the virile family man
or the brash and brittle job hopper
telling off a few bosses with what they could do
with the grind and a puny salary
no more a successful executive playing war games
throwing dicey decisions onto roulette wheels
Today I am who I am
pondering how it might have been
how things might have gone
how I could have gotten rich building an empire
but none of this could have ever happened
for I have always known who I am
