KISSING TEARS 1943

After telling you
that I would fly

your startled eyes
flood with tears

your speechless mouth
quivers with shock

of your knowing
enough about airplanes

to see a new danger
in our immediate future

my possible death
or enemy capture

emotion surfaces
across my love's face

as I draw you close
so lips may kiss tears

to soak up the anguish
of frightful days ahead.
