BEFORE THE MEMORY GOES
When we talk of wars I remember these:
Bob and Charlie and Bill and Sam and
Lindsey and Carl and Ray and Harry and
Tony and Harvey and Jerry and Tim and
Sandy and Roy and Larry and Hernandez
And Buck and Joe and Conrad and
Milton and Ron Rick and Marvin and
Herm and Don and Jack and Wayne
And whatzhisname who was always broke
Borrowing his way into friendship
They were special young men who
Quickly turned old before their time
Before early death for some fighting
The enemies of this nation
I honor and salute each one of them
Not just on special days but whenever
I read headlines and watch the news
