I LEARNED TO SEE

Storm clouds moving in
Darkness filled the sky.
No direction can I hope to see
Looking through my naked eye.

My hands are searching desperately
Only to find the air I breathe.
The sense of where I'm going
Is confused with no reprieve.

I search for a sign of light
But no stars are in the sky.
Darkness consumes my every thought
And I began to cry.

My heart is beating at a rapid rate.
I feel so tired and weak.
Falling to the sand beneath me
Solid ground is what I seek.

All I could do is close my eyes
And my senses hope to gain.
Then feeling in touch with my surroundings
I found strength in the gentle rain.

I found something that I somehow lost
And hadn't searched for in many years.
The rhythm of the ocean filled my body
And the sea breeze dried my tears.

The fear I felt was being alone.
How foolish could I be
With constant reminders everywhere?
The direction I need is within me.

Navigator! Oh God almighty!
For the darkness I thank thee.
For in the shadows of desperation
From my soul I learned to see.
