STATE HIGHWAY FIFTY-ONE
We were a couple for years,
way back in our teenage days
you worshiped the ground,
the very ground I walked on;
teaching me to have dreams.
You gave unconditional love,
love I had needed for so long.
It was time for a new beginning
following your senior graduation;
college, marriage, exciting plans,
planning as we drove for miles.
You enrolled in the University
the cutest apartment we found,
we found our new life together.
We got an early morning start
many miles to get back home
I was sleeping so peaceful
peaceful with my head in your lap;
you were driving the speed limit
down state highway fifty one.
One more day to exchange our vows,
our time in life was here.
Going over a hill you met a car
on the wrong side of the road,
the road that changed our plans.
That car was coming towards us fast.
There was nothing you could do.
The crash was fatal and tragic,
so tragic your life was taken.
It was a new beginning,
not the way we had planned.
You were the sunset in Heaven;
my sun set without you.
You, I have never forgotten,
not for one second in my dreams.
Dreams and love are to be cherished
for it’s what gives one the will to live.
I will forever and always love you
my first love, first sign of hope.
Hope you gave and taught me
in my innocent younger years,
For years have held me through times,
so many times of loneliness,
comforting uncertainties and fears.
