Eileen Breedlove

SO LONG AGO…

I never really knew much
Long ago about the war.
Young without the knowledge
Of what Nam even stood for.

I picked up bits and pieces
Mostly at school each day.
In history class we always started
By taking time to pray.

Looking back to my younger years
I wonder how it could be.
Those that suffered through living hell
Were a few years older than me.

I even married a Vietnam vet
And never heard about such things.
Like fox holes, gunners and combat
Or the PSTD that it brings.

Sometimes when I stop and think
I feel ashamed of me.
A lifetime of suffering was given by you,
All these years I didn’t see.

But then is then and now is now.
I’m learning more each day.
Words just feel inadequate
To what I would like to say.

An honor it is to share your life.
In my heart you’re number one.
Thank you my brothers for what you gave.
Welcome Home and Job Well Done!
