A SHINING STAR
If I could find the words to say
how I truly feel
I would inlay them in solid gold
And present them right to you.
I'd ask for your forgiveness
For my ignorance concerning war.
I never even knew a Vet
From the battlefields before.
I was very young back then,
just in Junior High.
My life was more than I cared to face
Often wishing I would just die.
So when the war was over
and our Soldiers were coming home,
To be perfectly honest with you,
I was never blessed by meeting one.
For those of you that were treated bad
I agree that it was a disgrace.
How could anyone have the right to judge
When they've never been in your place?
I am very honored now
That I know a lot of Veterans.
They are sharing their heart with me
Along with trials and tribulations.
I wish I could sprinkle stardust
On fallen Veterans as they lay.
It would be the most sacred blessing
I feel in my heart each day.
If I had magic powers
I would find each missing soldier
And place them with there loved ones
That have wept many times over.
If I could go back to the Viet Nam era
With pride I would welcome you home.
I'd help you through troubled waters
So you'd never face suffering alone.
That may sound like a giving thing
The way it might strike you.
But actually it's a selfish feeling
Because back then I needed you.
There are no words in the dictionary
To express what a Vet stands for in my eyes.
So let me just say, God Bless you my friend,
You have earned your wings of pride!
So shine those wings my brother
No matter where you are.
Whether in heaven or on earth
A Veteran is a shining star.
