THE LADY FROM THE MIST

Let your mind wander. This photograph by Steve Brandenburg is of a small scrap piece of Box Elder, 2”x 2” x ¼” thick. The things you can see in woodA vision of loveliness emerging from wood
Her face invisible beneath the red hood
A sign of hope… of an answer to prayer
Or is it just a stain that somehow got there
No carving needs done to this vision so rare
No whittling to design the clothes that she wears
From the mist she emerges in a warm flowing gown
Surrounded by wood in soft shades of brown
This image will be preserved for others to see
And give their opinion of what it may be
But the woodworker who found her always will see
A lady from the mist that once was a tree

THE WOODCARVER’S HANDS ARE STILL

Dedicated to Steve Brandenburg
May 1947- December 2007The gifts of love and friendship
Whittled from the woodcarver’s hands
Will be reminders of our friend
Who was a special sort of man
He was just a common fella
A humble sort of man
Who shared photos of the wildlife
That wandered on his land
He reminded me of a big ole bear
Yet a tender and caring soul
I will remember each piece he carved
From the rocking cycle to the beautiful bowls
Most of all I will always remember
That very special piece of wood
The one that needed no carving
Of the lady beneath the red hood
The Woodcarver’s hands now are still
He has crossed over to the other side
Where he stands with all his brothers
In heroes’ heaven where they reside
I will miss you my friend
