A GRUNT'S VIEW

Long ago we walked in the jungles of Viet Nam
Surrounded by many, mates with a few
Kill or be killed was our creed
Look after you mate! Was our bond

Long ago we walked in the Nam
How is it, no-one gives a dam?
Viet Nam it's said, that's not a real war
Dad's talking about 'it' again, what a bore!

Long ago we trained to get it right
Who are you kidding, it was only last night!
One foot in the present, one foot in the past
It only takes a second, to get there fast

Long ago I saw my mates die
Yesterday I saw my wife cry
"Where is that man who was a Digger?"
I'm here, inside, - don't that figger?

Long ago I shot that sod
Yesterday I arrived at St John of God
Surrounded by many, mates with a few
Thank God, I've got a room with a view!

Long ago I walked in Viet Nam
So what, get real, who gives a Damn?
Yesterday I walked at St John of God
Where there is nary a moan or a Groan
Is it possible with their help,
I can perhaps COME HOME?
