SONGS

I see the child inside me

head thrown back
singing with joyous abandon

eating lemon pie,
sweet and tart
meringue piled so high -
highest I have ever seen -
it touches and sticks to my nose

I see the skinny young girl inside me

head back, arm raised
singing with pure confidence

friends and hamburger homework
fixing each other's hair
for the day and the play
sleeping little
cast parties every night

I see the slim young woman inside me

head high, hands poised
singing with such pleasure

no food I can remember
only the red dress that moves
running through the rain
laughing in a now wet red dress
I still have that dress

I see somewhere inside me
that hopeful, happy person

joyful, confident, open
wanting so to sing again...
I'll wear the red dress.
