LONG TAN: FORTY YEARS LATER
This poem's about a group mates...
Who looked death in the eye...
And refused that day in August...
To retreat or say good-bye!
Those mates with odds astounding...
Dug in and stood their ground...
And held off quite a force...
With no one else around!
Their bravery and their courage...
Stands even to this day...
But somehow that great battle...
Fell into disarray!
The Aussies who took part...
And secured that plot of land...
Got little recognition...
For their sacrificing stand!
But that day lives forever...
In the minds of those who fought...
Though the victory left deep scares...
And mates in deep distraught!
Now forty years have passed...
Since the battle of Long Tan...
But closure hasn't come...
To some who made that stand!
What does it take to recognize...
Or honor those brave men...
Who sacrificed their very lives...
And would do it all again?
