DESERT SANDS

The sun is slowly rising
as we lay on the desert sands,
While every man is praying
with carefully folded hands.

We lay there quietly
in the bright dawning light,
all of us are wondering
who'll be coming back tonight.

While we wait for the fight
we surely know will come,
our thoughts are interrupted
with memories from home.

Thousands of miles separate
us from those we dearly love.
Nothing here but sand, the enemy
and God's blue sky above.

Soon a shot will fire
and the battle will begin.
We all knew when we joined up
the danger we'd be in.

But still we came to do the job
of which we're famous for,
to defend and free the oppressed
on a far and distant shore.

We know we'll lose some friends
we've made while we've been here.
Each one prays it won't be him,
hoping to escape his fear.

When this war is finally over
and we can all go home again,
we'll know we did the job
through sacrifice and pain.
