AN AUDIENCE OF ONE

An audience of one can be a problem
Especially on a night they do not show.
An audience of one can leave you hanging
If after the first act they up and go.

A road that isn't paved should be avoided
Especially if you do not know the way.
Yes, be prepared to take another highway
Or some where along the ride you're gonna pay.

An audience of one can leave abruptly
The sound of one hand clapping breaks the heart
No matter how many times you have rehearsed it
You may not be prepared to play the part

Of someone who gets left without a sentence
By someone who won't listen or explain
They say that life is not a dress rehearsal
And no one has a script to handle pain

To me, an empty house is but an omen
To pack the act and take it on the road
It's better than a theatre full of strangers
Who never laugh any jokes they're told.

A theater filled with strangers can be deadly
Soliloquies just falling on deaf ears.
No actor can pretend he's won an Oscar
If he when he flubs a line, he shows his fear

An audience of one can lose its interest
By intermission, you know how it goes
The final curtain drops with out a warning
If you don't break a leg – you break your nose

And though, you've been on time for each rehearsal
It seems while you were out they changed the script
And if you get the courage to audition
Some times when you show up, you're ill-equipped

To play the part they say was written for you
Yes that's the time you learn to tell a fib
And take a part you know that you can't handle
In life we all have times when we ad-lib

An audience without a sense of humor
Is like a kiss of death, before the birth
Be careful of the one who is not laughing
He doesn't understand what joy is worth

A man without a heart can play a tin man
A scare crow is a man without a brain
And water melts a witch if she's not careful
And in the end we all must deal with pain.

And act as if, when we are feeling selfish
And focus on something that's not called I
And audience of one is no solution
The toughest critic always spots the lie

An audience of one was once my problem
But I'm no longer lonely in a crowd
If all the worlds a stage I'll be an actress
Emoting is the one thing's that's allowed

The search for happiness can be exhausting
Solutions come in bottles for a price
And if you have the money and the patience
A shrink will always tell you something nice

See, I have found that aging is as asset
Though I no longer play the ingénue
I found that I can be my own advisor
My inner voice will tell me what to do

I know that some of you will think me crazy
But one day I woke up and I was free
My audience of one had found the answer
And everything I need is inside me
