POKER FACE

Awarded: January 27, 2008They say she has a poker face
She hides her feelings well
Or veils them in a cloud of smoke
With no apparent tell
What’s really going on with her?
She’s much too hard to read
She hears them as they speculate
The life that she must lead
Is she as sure as she pretends
Or just a polished act?
She counts the cards to figure out
Which way deck is stacked
She’s let her guard down in the past
To find it was a bluff
So now she holds it all inside
Her supple skin, turned rough
Her confidence to really trust
Her instincts or her gut
Has turned into a second-guess
Her life is but a but
A series of internal doubts
A mistress of disguise
A poker player in their midst
Her silence made of lies
