IN THE LIGHT

In the cold light of day
At the hard edge of town
He abandons his dreams
He awakes with a frown

He attempts to recall
What he spoke in his sleep
But he feels so alone
He’s too tired to weep

In the soft light of day
She awakes with a start
As the paw of her cat
Comes to capture her heart

And she tries to recall
What she dreamt in the night
If the morning will mean
They’ve abandoned the fight

They were moving along
When the earth pitched a shift
Neither one can be sure
When it set them adrift

Though he knows things have changed
He will not assume blame
Or say who is in charge;
Who has authored the game

In cold morning sun
She is filling their bowl
Thinking how it must be
When your heart and your soul

Has abandoned the place
Where he said they still sit
Only pieces remain
Now she sees they don’t fit

She has partnered a crime
By just turning her head
But she holds to the line
“That they had to be fed”

While he plays back the scene,
She is donning her cape
To get on with the day
And to make her escape

In the cold light and air
She can still hear his voice
She can hear her reply
“Well we all have a choice”

While she knows it is true
She thinks back to last night
And she prays to herself
They will make this thing right
