AM I TO UNDERSTAND

Am I to understand – you say – it’s hard to show your love
That somewhere in your past you saw too much
Am I to comprehend – you say – you’d tell me if you could
Instead I’m doomed to hunger for your touch

You tell me it’s the only way – to keep the pain at bay
Those dreams that bring your demons back alive
Am I to understand – you say – it isn’t what you choose
It’s just the way you’ve managed to survive

Am I to understand that it’s the going to extremes
That threatens all you are and what you’ve built
Am I to comprehend that it’s as good as it will get
It’s payback for the blood and guts that spilt

Am I to understand this wall of yours – that borders round your heart
The one with dragon imagery and moat
Is something you’re not proud of: you’d dismantle if you could
But who knows to the surface – what would float

Am I to understand your love is measured in degrees
The wreckage of your past decrees it so
Am I to comprehend – you say – you love me more than life
Alas – your fear will never let it show
