THE DAY OUR HEROES FELL
White grave markers standing proudly in the sun,
What stories they could tell.
They stand for honor from all our wars
On the day our heroes fell.
Each marker represents a life
Of a husband, father or brother.
"For no greater love hath a man
Than to lay down his life for another."
Many are crosses while others are stars,
All represent a portion of hell
That each of these patriots certainly endured
On the day our heroes fell.
The sound of TAPS can often be heard,
Drifting sadly through rolling hills.
The sounding of only a few short notes,
Can cause tear filled eyes to spill.
As I solemnly walk through this hallowed ground
Tears streaming down my face,
My thoughts are of their families
As precious memories fill their space.
So long my comrades, sleep with God,
For you have no more to give.
You gave your young life so courageously
So others, like me, may live.
And as I leave here,
Of you I'll say:
For my tomorrow
You gave your today.
