A SOLDIER'S LAMENT

I lie on clean cotton sheets
Alone in this white room
And listen to the rhythmic beats
Of the harbinger of my doom

I know I won't survive
This my latest battle
But many others are alive
Their tale more than prattle

I took the warrior stand
There never was one bolder
I served my beloved land
As a proud and feisty soldier

Now I struggle with a foe
Whose existence is denied
For the public can never know
How our leaders lied

The war had been ended
For the sake of world opinion
Then we found those who defended
Had used their chemical poison

Then the talk of going back
To finish what we started
Destroy the weapons of mass attack
And render Saddam dearly departed

I live and each day pray
And gasp for every breath
I live just to see the day
When Hussein is put to death
